Lost a day
2006-07-24, 3:05 p.m.

You know, when you have string after string of bad days, nothing makes you smile more than a package. Especially when you open the package to find this:

My many thanks to the lovely Heidi for the unexpected present.

Now, I am sure that everyone would be delighted at the gift of an edible banana slug, but this gift is especially perfect for me.

I know Ive mentioned a million times my love for all things banana flavored, so theres reason # 1.

Also, I spent 3 years at the University of California Santa Cruz. Their mascot happens to be the Banana Slug. When the school was first founded (and Santa Cruz was then the ultimate school of rebels, acid users and people who prefer not to shave), the school decided to pick the Sea Lion as their mascot. A rebellion (imagine that, a rebellion at a school of rebels) ensued and the students fought for their right to choose their own mascot. In order to thumb their noses at the administration, they chose the banana slug. Ah, the joy of college, how I miss you.

Other than receiving random banana slugs in the mail, not much is happening. Oh, except that I lost Saturday.

How do you lose a day? I know, its kind of hard to do so heres the story.

Friday night, I was experiencing quite a bit of pain. I dealt with it as best as I could until about 7ish. Then I took some of my pain meds. I woke up about every 4 to 8 hours and took another one. At some point, I woke up and went down stairs to get something to eat or drink or something. It was about 10ish in the morning. I sat at the table with my parents to chat for a moment and noticed the Sunday paper on the table. I then said Oh, they delivered the Sunday paper early all perplexed like. Then my parents said No Janet, today is Sunday. You slept all the way through Saturday. I lost an entire day. Not just any day, but a Saturday, my favorite day. It still hurts. Bleh.

My appointment with the specialist isnt until August 15th because one of their doctors is out on leave so theyre all backed up so a waiting I shall do. I just called my own doctor because Im trying to get a prescription for these lidocaine patches. They are patches that have lidocaine (like what they use when they do local surgeries) and when you wear them, they help with the pain but dont make your brain all foggy. My aunt uses them and she sent me some and they are really helping (except that you cant wear them continuously, so the foggy-brain pain medicine is still needed) but I need to get my own prescription. Well, after calling my primary doctor several times and getting voicemail each time, I decided to listen to the entire voicemail and leave a message. Turns out my doctor was in a car accident and broke her shoulder and wont be in for a while. I know theyll have someone covering her patients, so I left a message and Ill keep trying to call back until I get the office girl shes the bomb and has been working with me so long that she knows my voice on the phone. In the meantime, at least I have the ones from my aunt.

Thats really all Im up to these days. Really exciting, I know. Eating banana slugs and losing Saturdays. Woo Hoo.
